Way back in 2010, I started my food blog, Urban Stomach, with no professional writing or food related experience whatsoever. I noticed then that not many people writing about local restaurants were from San Francisco and I hunched that there was a niche for the perspective of someone who grew up worshiping at the alters of non-descript corner store sandwich counters, closet sized Vietnamese grilled chicken shacks, and Zuni Cafe. Turned out my hunch was right. Eight months after launching Urban Stomach, I was plucked from obscurity to start writing small bits for SF Weekly’s “SFoodie” section, kind of an Eater ahead of its time. Two years later, I started filling in at SF Weekly as a full fledged critic and next thing I know, in a “holy shit” moment in 2013, I was asked to be a restaurant critic at the San Francisco Examiner.

And then in 2015 it suddenly ended. The Examiner cut costs and dropped their food section. I’d recently been promoted in my “real” job at USF and was excitedly running a mile a minute. And to be honest, I was kind of fried with food writing. So I stopped. And I almost immediately regretted it.

So why bring back Urban Stomach in 2019? Well, with one kid in college and another halfway through high school, I’ve got a little more free time on my hands. I love exploring the city’s food nooks and crannies now more than ever and want a platform to tell the world, or the few friends and relatives who will actually read this thing, all about them. And I’m quickly tiring of how precious some of our local food writing has become and rather than bitch and moan about it (guilty) I want to provide an alternative for readers who just want to know if food tastes good or if it sucks, if service is nice, and how much everything costs. Is that so wrong? Welcome back to Urban Stomach.
